OCO is a flat-pack modular table lamp collection designed and developed under the personal design studio "mafer trujillo". The collection's first model, MOD·01, is built from laser-cut aluminum sheet, an acrylic sphere diffuser, and 3D-printed resin separators, all joined with visible Chicago screws: no glue, no permanent processes. Every piece is named, functional, and replaceable, turning assembly itself into part of the product experience rather than a hidden manufacturing step. OCO was developed as a full academic deliverable: research, business model, cost structure, and viability plan. And doubles as a real commercial proposal aimed at the accessible mid-range segment of the Mexican lighting market.
the challenge
The low-cost lighting market is saturated with imported, plastic, low-quality products with a lifespan of roughly two years, objects designed to be replaced, not repaired. At the same time, research showed that a large share of consumers (40.4%, WGSN 2024) now prefer modern design where durability is the key purchase driver, and the Industrial Futurism trend (WGSN 2026) points toward circular products that expose their own process and materials rather than concealing them. This revealed a clear gap: real material quality and design identity existed only at aspirational, high-end price points, leaving no accessible option for consumers who wanted a well-made, honest object without paying a premium.
Solution
OCO answers this gap with a lamp built on material honesty and repairability. The flat-pack system ships everything needed to build the lamp in a single box: no specialized tools, and full assembly in under 10 minutes. While the same packaging can be reused to ship, store, and reassemble the piece. Because the aluminum body, acrylic diffuser, and resin separators are mechanically fastened rather than bonded, individual parts can be replaced or swapped rather than discarded, extending the product's life well beyond typical low-cost lighting. This process: visible, modular, and designed to be taken apar, is the core design argument of the piece. OCO isn't just a lamp, it's a proposal for how everyday objects should work: visible, repairable, upgradable.
